Actors that live in the D.C. area have resources that can help them develop their talents. Lots of the actors want the fame and fortune that comes with the big screen, but some may need a little help. Places like the Actors’ Center has been exactly what they need to grow.

Some actors head to Hollywood for a shot at the big screen. Others will go to New York for a chance at Broadway. These places are awesome, but everyone will not get there overnight. Sometimes it’s a struggle. People that are willing to do the work will appreciate any chance for help.

Washington D.C. has places like the Actors’ center that serve as a resource for both aspiring and accomplished actors. The workshops that are offered can be a part of a great experience that challenges actors. Resource centers like this will have monologue coaches. They will also have practice exercises that allow groups to act out scenes.

Aspiring actors may assume that the path to acting is a straight shot. This is rarely the way that it works. To the contrary, most actors need a lot of help. Many of them have detours before they make it big.

There are tons of great shows playing in the DC area right now and they’re waiting for you to come out! Set your home security system</a and get the family in the car - here are a few of the best performances playing now and in the near future in the Washington DC area:
Les Miserable: Playing at the Kennedy Center right now, this classic makes a great night out for spouses and families alike. It’s a Broadway worthy production and you can get seats relatively cheaply online so look today to reserve your seat.
Othello: Playing at the Folger Theater in only a matter of weeks, you’ve got to find a great reason to get some Shakespeare in this year! Othello is a tale of family and guilt and it’s not to be missed in DC.
After the Quake: No, not the DC earthquake in August, the terrifying tragedy that took place in Kobe, Japan nearly 16 years ago. This human interest art piece is fascinating and saddening but it’s a great time for the show to air.

Acting can be a great outlet. Even if not aspiring for a career on-stage, the art of acting makes a wholesome, self-exploratory hobby, by which you can enhance other aspects of your personal and/or work life. What will trying your hand at theater do for you?

Build Confidence As the old saying goes, many individuals would rather be the person in the coffin rather than the one delivering the eulogy. Speaking in front of others should not be a fear to avoid at all costs, rather an opportunity to introduce yourself or make your case on a grand platform. The performing arts can be a great way to overcome fears of stage fright, nurturing the self-assurance to speak your mind regardless of what others might think.

Self-Discovery In acting, one is danger of being typecast. So are everyday individuals if they do not take the time to get to know themselves through a new lens. What better way to reexamine your very being than to see yourself playing a character completely your opposite. To adapt the faade of another in a believable manner is a challenging endeavor, with the potential to reveal unknown truths about the man or woman behind the mask.

Social Fulfillment Perhaps the most rewarding aspect of getting involved in any new hobby is the opportunity to meet new, incredible people. The community of thespians and theatre enthusiasts is undoubtedly a vibrant cast. Between time spent in rehearsals and the pride after pulling off a successful production, fellow actors bond with one another, all working towards the same ends.

You don’t have to act for a living, or even live to act, in order to get involved in the local theater community. All that is required is a kindred spirit, appreciation for storytelling and a desire to cast any lingering doubts or inhibitions to the wind.
