Washington, DC is a hot place to be if you are an actor looking for work. The metro area boasts hundreds of theater companies ranging from amateur to professional, from small to large, from experimental to traditional, and everything in between!
The first step to finding just the right acting gig is to google like you’ve never googled before. Find out what the theatres are, where they are, and when they are having auditions. If you’re still trying to break into professional work, you’ll be glad to know that many of the theaters in the DC area who pay will accept non-equity actors! Even companies with an equity contract will often audition non-members. This could be your ticket to the union membership you’ve dreamed of!
Don’t forget, you’ll need a professional headshot and resume, and some excellent, prepared audition monologues and musical numbers. When you’re ready, and have done your research, you’ll find no shortage of auditions to attend. Be sure to find out when the League of Washington, DC Area Theatres have scheduled their annual combined auditions. This is one event you don’t want to miss, and is usually in February or March of each year. Break a leg!
