Becoming an actress in Washington D.C. is much the same as becoming an actress anywhere else in the world. However one of the perks of theater outside of the major hubs of L.A, New York City and Chicago is that there’s slightly less competition. This doesn’t mean you can slack off, get great head shots, find an agent and audition, audition, audition!
Become familiar with local theaters and theater companies, learn when their seasons begin and end and when they are casting new projects. It goes with out saying that you want to audition as much as you can but you also want to get to know the main players in these theaters and theater groups because networking is how you get jobs. People will be more willing to cast you when they already know you and know what you can do. While resources like Backstage tend to be more L.A and New York focused they do occasionally have jobs elsewhere. Websites like Craigslist are also a great place to search for gigs. Local colleges can also offer jobs in student films which are a great way to boost your portfolio, even if they don’t pay a lot or anything.
